Recycling your car is one of the most environmentally responsible choices you can make. It keeps valuable materials in circulation, prevents hazardous fluids from entering landfills, and supports a more sustainable automotive lifecycle. And with the right preparation, the entire process can be simple and stress-free. This guide walks you through the essential steps to take before your vehicle is picked up by a recycler so you can feel confident and ready on pickup day.
Before your vehicle can be recycled, you’ll need to have your paperwork in order.
Your title is the legal document that allows a recycler to transfer ownership. If you can’t find it, you may be able to request a duplicate through your local DMV. If there’s a lien listed, ensure it has been formally released.
Some states require proof of identity when a vehicle is transferred. Make sure the name on your ID matches the name listed on the title.
Vehicles tend to collect more personal items than most people realize. Before the tow truck arrives, take a few minutes to thoroughly clear out the interior.
This includes:
Items commonly forgotten include sunglasses, chargers, mail, parking passes, garage door openers, medication, and toll transponders.
If you’ve installed aftermarket equipment—such as a roof rack, upgraded stereo, or removable GPS—this is the time to take it off. Once the recycler takes possession, the vehicle cannot be disassembled for personal items.
Be sure to leave any add-ons that were included in your initial vehicle intake form – the recycler will be expecting them.
Many states require you to remove and return your license plates before the vehicle is processed. Others allow you to keep them. Review your state’s RMV/DMV guidelines so you know whether plates must be returned, transferred, or simply recycled as scrap.
You should wait until the car has been picked up before canceling insurance to avoid any gaps in coverage.
Once the car is officially out of your possession, contact your insurance company to end coverage or update your policy.
Save your cancellation confirmation and any final statements for your records.
A straightforward pickup helps ensure that your vehicle moves quickly and safely to its recycler.
Move the vehicle to an area where the tow truck can easily reach it. If the car is blocked in, doesn’t roll, or is on uneven terrain, inform the dispatcher ahead of time.
Keys are always helpful but not required. If you do have the keys, have them ready for the tow operator.
Let the team know whether the car rolls, steers, or has flat tires. This helps dispatch assign appropriate equipment. These notes can be added in your Donor Console or to the comments section of your vehicle intake form.
On pickup day, the tow operator will:
Most pickups take just a few minutes.
After your vehicle has been removed, take care of your remaining administrative steps.
Check state guidelines for plate return or disposal.
Many states require a release of liability form to officially notify the state that the vehicle is no longer in your possession. This protects you from any future claims associated with the car.
One of the unique benefits of participating in the SHiFT Vehicle Retirement Initiative® is the ability to follow your vehicle through every step of its recycling journey. SHiFT is powered by Advanced Remarketing Services (ARS), the same organization that manages the secure Donor Console. After your vehicle is picked up, you can log into the console to see real-time status updates—from arrival at the recycling facility to key stages of dismantling and material recovery. This added visibility ensures you always know where your vehicle is in the recycling process and how its components are being responsibly reclaimed, supporting a more transparent and sustainable circular economy.
