Recycle Your Car for the Environment

Empire State Sustainability: A Guide to New York’s Auto Recycling Regulations

From the beautiful views of Niagara Falls to the bustling streets of Manhattan, the state of New York offers some of the most diverse landscapes for roadtrips in the continental United States. But when it’s time to get rid of your car in New York, the state regulations can be a little daunting for the new auto recycler. In this article, we breakdown the documentation and title processes, illuminate how to flag unlicensed or illegal operators, and uncover some local incentives that make recycling your car the best decision for your vehicle and for you.

Getting Your New York Vehicle Paperwork and Title in Order

Your Vehicle Title: One little piece of paper that can be the source of so many headaches for vehicle owners who don’t understand the order of operations when it comes to recycling your car. Avoid the hassle by following these steps in this order:

  1. Sign over your NYS Certificate of Title correctly to the auto recycler that is picking up your vehicle. That means no cross-outs, no white out, and ensuring that the seller information exactly matches the owner information that is printed on the title.
  2. Obtain proof of loan satisfaction (Form MV-901 or a formal lender letter) if the lien hasn’t been officially released on your title.
  3. Remove and hand in your license plates to your local DMV and obtain an official receipt to legally cancel your vehicle insurance and prevent state fines. We repeat – do this before you cancel your vehicle insurance so you aren’t penalized down the road.
  4. Secure a signed bill of sale and a copy of your donation receipt so you aren’t held liable for the car once it leaves your possession.

Did you know you can track your vehicle?

When you recycle with SHiFT, you can track your car donation in real-time from your Donor Console.

Must-Haves When Finding an Auto Recycler

Not all auto recycling is created equal – and not all New York auto yards are certified and licensed to properly retire your vehicle. If you decide to do your own legwork and submit your vehicle to a local auto recycler, look for these items:

  1. Confirm the yard is a licensed NYS DEC vehicle dismantler.
  2. If you have an EV or Hybrid vehicle, call the yard to ensure they can accept and properly recycle your vehicle. High-voltage batteries require separate recycling, storage, and safety protocols that not all businesses possess.
  3. Be wary of illegal “cash of junk cars” flyers or unlicensed operators that often drain fluids into municipal storm drains or abandon vehicle shells on public roads.

By confirming you’re retiring your vehicle with a licensed, certified auto recycler, you make sure that your vehicle’s final mile is eco-friendly and safe. SHiFT® works with a nationwide network of only the highest-certified auto recycling partners and we take care of contacting them on your behalf when you’re ready to recycle your vehicle.

A Note About Catalytic Converters: New York enforces strict laws regulating detached catalytic converter sales to combat auto theft. Selling a loose converter independently requires proof of vehicle ownership or specific business registration.

What's the Benefit of Recycling Your Vehicle in New York?

Recycling an old car is as much a financial decision as it is an environmental one. Let’s make sure you aren’t leaving money on the table (or accidentally setting yourself up for municipal fines) by going over the most common incentives and real-world challenges of recycling in the state of New York.

Tax Benefits of Recycling Your Vehicle

Charitable Tax Write-Offs

When you recycle your vehicle with SHiFT, you’re vehicle transaction is considered a donation as any proceeds from your car support ARTI, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to the training and education of automotive recyclers. Depending upon your vehicle’s condition and your tax bracket, the tax savings from a donation may outweigh a small cash offer from a salvage yard.

NYS EV Upgrade Incentives

Recycling a traditional gas-powered vehicle and replacing it with an electric model opens the door to state incentives. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) manages the Drive Clean Rebate, and offers up to $2,000 off at the point of sale for qualifying new battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. You could potentially combine this with other federal clean vehicle credits to offset the cost of transitioning to zero-emission driving.

Free Towing with SHiFT Auto Recycling Partners

Depending on where your vehicle is located, selling directly to the nearest licensed DEC dismantler could result in third-party towing fees that eat into your scrap payout. When you recycle through SHiFT, any towing fees are completely covered so you can responsibly recycle your vehicle at no cost to you

Warning for NYC Metro Area Vehicle Owners: Staging an un-plated junk vehicle on a public street while waiting for a tow truck could result in municipal fines or impoundment. Call our team for guidance: (888) 755-5481
