SHiFT® Featured in Federal News Network: Optimizing Fleet Vehicle Recycling Strategies

We are proud to share that Chapin Griffith, highlights what was recently featured in Federal News Network. In the piece, Griffith discusses a critical challenge for government and municipal agencies: how to optimize end-of-life vehicle (ELV) disposal to minimize risk and maximize sustainability.

Moving Beyond Traditional Resale and Auctions

For decades, the standard procedure for an unused car or aging truck in a government fleet was the auction block. However, as Griffith highlights, traditional resale and auction methods often fail to deliver meaningful financial returns for low-value assets. Beyond the low recovery price, these methods can create significant environmental and administrative burdens. When a high-polluting vehicle is sold at auction, it often remains on the road, continuing to leak toxins and emit greenhouse gases, which contradicts the sustainability goals of many modern agencies.

Applying Circular Thinking to Fleet Management

The transition to a more efficient model requires a shift toward circular thinking. Instead of viewing an old vehicle as a liability to be sold off, SHiFT® encourages managers to see it as a source of valuable materials. Vehicle recycling ensures that these assets are fully retired, meaning they are taken off the road permanently. This prevents the “zombie fleet” effect, where retired government vehicles continue to pollute local communities.
