Recycle Your Car for the Environment

What Makes a Recycler “Green”?

“Green” has become a buzzword in nearly every industry—and auto recycling is no exception. But at SHiFT, we believe that true sustainability requires more than a label. That’s why we partner only with eco-friendly auto recycling facilities that meet rigorous environmental and operational standards.

In this article, we’ll break down what it really means to be a green recycler, how SHiFT selects its partners, and why it matters to anyone who wants their end-of-life vehicle to leave a lighter footprint.

What Does "Green" Really Mean in Auto Recycling?

Auto recycling plays a crucial role in reducing waste, recovering materials, and lowering emissions. But many recyclers labeled “green” fall short of these goals.

Often, recyclers who aren’t eco-friendly will:

  • Resell older, polluting vehicles or parts that need to be retired
  • Improperly dispose of hazardous fluids or materials
  • Crush and abandon shells without reclaiming recyclable components
  • Use “green” as a marketing term without meaningful environmental practices

That’s not what SHiFT stands for.

The SHiFT Criteria for Eco-Friendly Auto Recycling

We don’t just accept recyclers—we vet them. Every SHiFT partner facility must meet our standards for eco-friendly auto recycling, which includes:

1. Recycling to Completion

SHiFT facilities remove vehicles from the road permanently. That means no second life in high-emission markets. Instead, vehicles are:

  • Fully dismantled
  • Reusable parts harvested (reducing new part production emissions)
  • Fluids extracted and refined or disposed of safely
  • Vehicle hull / engine crushed and shredded for further material refinement
  • Hazardous materials neutralized

2. Safe Handling of Hazardous Waste

Every vehicle contains materials that can pollute air, water, and soil if mishandled. SHiFT recyclers must:

  • Safely drain and recycle oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolants, and any other vehicle fluids
  • Remove and recycle lead-acid and lithium batteries
  • Responsibly dispose of tires and refrigerants

3. Environmental Compliance and Certifications

We prioritize recyclers that meet or exceed local, state, and federal environmental standards.

All SHiFT partners are required to:

  • Maintain current local, state, and federal required licensing and certifications
  • Undergo regular audits and compliance checks
  • Implement best practices for environmental reporting and safety

Most SHiFT partners also:

  • Hold CAR and/or ARA certifications and memberships
  • Complete more frequent environmental and safety compliance audits
  • Participate in ongoing training through certified organizations like ARTI or ARA.

4. Transparent Operations

We require clear, documented processes. SHiFT facilities provide:

  • Signed affidavits for each vehicle, committing to the full recycling, engine retirement, and environmental compliance
  • Tracking data for carbon impact reporting
  • Open communication about environmental practices

5. Commitment to Community and Sustainability

Eco-friendly recycling isn’t just about materials—it’s about mindset. SHiFT favors partners who:

  • Engage in sustainability education or community programs
  • Maintain safe, ethical workplaces
  • Lead by example in the automotive recycling industry
