When we think about fighting climate change, we often think big—wind farms, electric vehicles, global policy shifts. But real change can start in your driveway. Recycling your vehicle at the end of its life may seem like a small decision, but the environmental ripple effect is much larger than most people realize.
At SHiFT, we believe in helping people make the right choice, not just the easy one. And part of that is showing why it matters.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that recycling scrap metal requires approximately 74% less energy than creating new metal from raw materials. That’s a major win for the planet.
It’s especially powerful when applied to automobiles—because the average car is made of about 65% steel by weight. That means the moment your car enters the recycling stream, it’s already a high-value contributor to energy savings and emissions reduction.
Let’s break this down.
The average passenger vehicle weighs around 4,000 pounds (2 tons). With 65% of that made of steel, that’s 2,600 pounds of steel per car.
Producing one ton of steel from raw materials generates around 1.85 tons of CO₂ emissions. But if we use recycled steel instead, we cut emissions by 74%, which saves about 1.37 tons of CO₂ per ton of steel.
So per vehicle:
1.3 tons of steel (from 2,600 lbs)
× 1.37 tons of CO₂ saved per ton of recycled steel
= ~1.78 tons of CO₂ emissions saved per car
That’s the equivalent of:
Charging over 200,000 smartphones
Burning 2,000 pounds of coal
Driving a gasoline car for 4,000 miles
Now let’s scale it up.
If just 10 cars are recycled responsibly, the result is a reduction of 17.8 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.
To visualize that:
That’s like removing four gas-powered cars from the road for an entire year
Or planting 290 tree seedlings and letting them grow for 10 years
Or the amount of carbon sequestered by 21 acres of U.S. forest in one year
This isn’t hypothetical. It’s measurable, and it happens every time a car is recycled the right way.
Not all recycling programs are created equal. At SHiFT, we only work with certified, eco-conscious recycling partners who follow strict environmental protocols and prioritize emissions reductions, safe disposal, and parts reuse.
Your car may be done driving, but it’s not done doing good.
